Accedian and SK Telecom Win Global Telecoms Business Award for Collaboration on Software-Defined Network Project

ward recognizes SK Telecom and Accedian collaboration on a nationwide, big data analytics-driven, multi-vendor, software-defined network in South Korea

London, United Kingdom – May 26, 2016 – Accedian, the end-to-end network performance experts, announced today that it won a Global Telecoms Business Innovation Award, recognized along with SK Telecom, in the Mobile Infrastructure Innovation category, for their collaboration on a fully automated, software-defined mobile network spanning the operator’s nationwide footprint in South Korea. Winners were announced on May 25th at an awards dinner in London, part of the two-day Global Telecoms Business Telecoms Innovation and Technology Summit.

The winning project, completed in 2015, was motivated by growing network complexity that led SK Telecom to introduce automation to enable its network to ‘think’ and ‘act’ on its own. Accedian provided the network performance assurance and visibility technology that SK Telecom needed to gain a real-time, network-wide view of performance and quality of experience (QoE)—capabilities that act as the nervous system driving the operator’s software-defined network (SDN), a big data analytics driven, multi-vendor environment.

SK Telecom deployed Accedian’s market-leading performance monitoring solution across
its nationwide mobile network, covering 12,000 locations across South Korea’s six largest cities. Central to SK Telecom’s commitment to optimizing performance, the solution automates all aspects of network processes across every level—covering radio, service, and QoS. This deployment—part of the operator’s ongoing migration toward the intelligent, SDN-controlled networks that will deliver 5G—resulted in radically reduced OPEX, significantly increased network ROI, and the ability to deliver per-subscriber QoE-based resource allocation.

“The software-defined network created through collaboration between SK Telecom and Accedian demonstrates the value of virtualized performance assurance and visibility to overcome technical complexity, drive efficiencies, and improve customer quality of experience,” said Keith Donahue, VP Product Management and Services, Accedian. “We are honored to receive an Innovation Award recognizing the results and significance of this project.”

“This award highlights our commitment to improving the mobile experience of customers, through virtualized network monitoring solutions,” said Shim Sang-su, Senior Vice President and Head of Network Biz Supporting Group, SK Telecom. “The collaboration with Accedian played an important role in that ongoing goal, enabling us to rapidly development a solution and apply it to our commercial network. Using the foundational visibility Accedian solutions bring to our network, we are now advancing the performance of mobile networks worldwide through our Global Network Management and Consulting Services program.”

Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards are given for projects involving at least one telecom operator and at least one telecoms vendor, recognizing collaboration in the industry.
