Industry 4.0 and the rise of IoT

Welcome to The Accedian Top 10 where we bring you the 10 most valuable pieces of content around performance, end user experience and cybersecurity threat detection we have recently come across. The list is compiled from articles, reports, and other interesting tidbits found by our performance and cybersecurity subject matter experts across the globe.

In this edition, we bring you articles related to Industry 4.0, Industrial IoT and the cybersecurity challenges related to manufacturing and Industry 4.0.

To hear more about this live, register for the upcoming 5G: Performing at the Edge digital event happening the second week of September where topics such as “Deploying a private network to accelerate manufacturing” and “5G/edge computing: the opportunity to address Industry 4.0” (research by Analysys Mason’s Caroline Chappell) are featured on the agenda.

Read on for this week’s Top 10!

1. Industry 4.0: At the intersection of readiness and responsibility. This article from Deloitte highlights the results of their annual Insights survey with responses from more than 2,000 C-suite execs across 19 countries.

2. Understanding IoT in the age of 5G to unlock Industry 4.0: Written by T-Mobile for Business and featured on Forbes, this piece discusses IoT’s potential impact on the manufacturing industry (also the industry they estimate will be affected most radically).

3. Don’t miss the only performance-focused digital event around 5G and the edge! Featuring speakers from BT Sport, Accenture, Saudi Telecom, MobiledgeX, and Accedian (to name a few), the event will focus on the importance of performance for edge uses cases in various sectors – one of which is, you guessed it, Industry 4.0.

4. Moving on to IIoT and looking again at the automotive industry, Automotive World discusses how manufacturers can use Industry 4.0 technology as a way to operate at optimal performance and keep its workforce safe and healthy.

5. Seeing it put into practice – BT unveils the UK’s first live 5G private network for Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. BT is working with the Worcestershire 5G Testbed (W5G) as its lead technology partner to accelerate its vision of smart manufacturing delivered through the UK’s first live 5G factory installation.

6. IDC’s digital transformation report focuses on industrial organizations and DX maturity. Guess the top reason IoT pilots and PoCs failed to move to full production? That’s right, because the project had exposed security concerns that had to be addressed before expanding the deployment.

The Cyber Threat Detection Space

7. Nearly half of manufacturers and distributors have been the target of cyberattacks in the past year, according to survey from consulting firm Sikich, yet fewer than 40% of respondents said they take steps to prevent data breaches, even though, statistically speaking, they or a supply chain partner has probably fallen victim to one.

8. How can CSPs build trust with 5G security? This article on Security Boulevard outlines the key components of security (analytics and automation) and how security-related intelligence should be shared throughout the entire network, among a trusted ecosystem of suppliers, partners and customers to proactively identify and mitigate threats.

9. In case you missed it, Capital One was ordered to pay an $80 million penalty for their role in the 2019 data breach where more than 100 million customers’ personal info was exposed.

10. Unbeknown to me, the EU also has a European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA). ENISA conducted a gap analysis in order to identify main challenges to the adoption of the security measures and security of Industry 4.0 and Industrial IoT. Although the short report is rather high level, the knowledge of this organization could be extremely helpful to some of our friends in the EU. Visit enisa.europe.eu for more information, contacts, and news.

And we will end this edition of the Accedian Top 10 with one more piece of material from Accedian. This Giving Control Back to CIOs solution brief focuses on how CIOs can deliver on their digital transformation investments and initiatives. Questions? Let us know!
