Unleashing the value of Open RAN: everything you need to know

To stay competitive, mobile networks need to run more software-driven, virtualized, flexible, intelligent and energy-efficient environments. How has the RAN evolved to check these boxes?

Within the mobile architecture, the radio access network plays a key role as the edge of the network providing the connectivity layer to end devices and customers. The evolution of RAN has been taking place since the first deployment of a mobile network. This evolution has followed the steps of the industry and the demands of the customers, and today it is moving in the direction of becoming more open and smarter than previous generations.

The shift in the way mobile networks operate has resulted in the new RAN evolution relying on real-time, AI & ML based analytics to support the complexity needed to build the service and intelligent network architecture that is the essence of a 5G network.

The industry will need to come to a point where virtualization through open, standardized interfaces are the enablers for designing an open architecture based on a common reference model. To this point, the O-RAN Alliance has been working to make this a reality in the RAN.

Open source white-box elements that house standards-based software and hardware elements are the key to success. These can be leveraged to build a RAN structure as part of the next-generation wireless network that is cost-effective, agile, and open to global evolution at a feasible cost. Also, the ability to leverage niche innovations that are interoperable and able to introduce new services, or customize the network designs that fit the needs of the operators in the future is the dream.

O-RAN vs 5G

5G will make networks increasingly more complex. The densification of the network and services coupled together with enriched and more demanding applications will require new ways to tame this complexity.

The human senses and capabilities are limited. The ability to have a 360 degree in-depth level of visibility into the future of networks, service overlays, and application behavior for thousands of service instances that will be dynamic in nature will simply be out of the scope of human capabilities. The need for the orchestration to rely on ‘correct’ and timely performance data will be even more important and the process modes for service deployment and network slicing become more intensive in nature for deploying, optimizing, and operating network and services.

The future of O-RAN

The network of tomorrow must be automated and self-driving where they will need to leverage new data and learning sources to operationalize the automation of the network and service functions. As well as being able to optimize all of this to reduce operating expenses (OPEX).

Accedian is in alignment with the O-RAN vision where a standards-based performance management solution will need to be part of the overall solution for the network to be able to assure the RAN and other components of the network that may be affecting the RAN so that intelligent decisions can be made by the higher-level entities such as orchestrators that will instantiate and manage the network dynamically to satisfy the needs and quality of experience of their customers.
